Job Description

Summary of the Job

The successful candidate will perform research to discover and develop new UF/NF/RO membranes to solve some of the world's toughest to treat water and process challenges. In this hands-on, laboratory-based role the successful candidate will utilize scientific principles, and their knowledge of chemistry, and polymer micro- and macrostructure to fabricate new membrane materials, characterize their separation properties, and collaborate with a global cross-functional team to implement their ideas through the commercial launch of new products.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, select, synthesize, and modify polymeric materials and monomers at laboratory scale to create new polymeric separation membranes

  • Lead development of in-house platform technology to standardize membrane material design, developing principles and processes that can be universally applied to reduce the development period for new products.

  • Lead new product introduction (NPI) projects. Work with cross-functional team to develop ideas from laboratory-scale to commercial reality.

  • Perform characterization and testing of synthesized membranes to determine their properties and separation performance.

  • Analyze test data using statistical analysis tools and prepare summary presentations and written reports.

  • Participate in the transfer of knowledge to scale-up of new membrane chemistries and processes to pilot production. Document experimental procedures and technical data consistent with department policies and practices to maintain records appropriate for protection of intellectual property.

  • Analyze patents for awareness of emerging trends and challenges to competitive position, and identify opportunities for strategic intellectual property to protect innovations.

  • Contribute to department and site safety efforts through adherence to policies and training, participation in activities, and raising safety concerns.

Qualifications

Hard Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of scientific principles, chemistry, and polymer micro-and macrostructure to produce materials that exhibit desired performance in real world applications.

  • Experience with coatings technology, coating equipment, and polymer membrane characterization methods.

  • Strong laboratory and safe chemical handling skills.

  • Experience with statistical analysis tools and Design of Experiment approach.

  • Good written and verbal English communication skills. Ability to communicate complex scientific information across multiple levels of the organization

  • Creative mindset for ideation, innovation, and seeking inspiration broadly

  • Problem solving and critical thinking for troubleshooting, evaluation of new concepts and emerging technologies

  • Interpersonal skills for communication at all levels of the organization, across multiple functions, and with international collaborations

  • Attention to detail to ensure quality of lab work to enable sound data-driven decisions

  • Persistence for working through technical and administrative challenges to complete activities

  • Ability to learn and synthesize new information for patent analysis, emerging technology assessment, and ideation for innovation

Education & Experience

Required:

  • M.S. in Membrane Science or related applied scientific discipline with 5+ years of hands-on industrial research experience in synthesis and characterization of membranes for water, process, or gas separations

Preferred:

  • • Ph.D. in Membrane Science or related applied scientific discipline (Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, etc.) with emphasis in synthesis and characterization of membranes and 5+ years of experience

Working Conditions

  • This is a hands-on role, working in a laboratory environment, handling chemicals on a daily basis

  • Limited travel, primarily within region, for conferences, collaborations and special assignments

  • As part of a global team, there is a need for virtual meetings with EU and APAC on regular basis
